James H. Segars Jr., M.D., a professor of gynecology and obstetrics, has been awarded the 2021 Distinguished Researcher Award by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). The award recognizes a member of the ASRM who has made outstanding contributions to clinical or basic research in reproduction. It also recognizes the expert’s long-term commitment to advancing the frontiers of research in reproductive sciences and educating future scholars in the field. For the past 20 years, a major focus of Segars’ research has been the exploration of molecular mechanisms responsible for reproductive diseases. As director of the Howard W. and Georgeanna Seegar Jones Laboratory of Reproductive Sciences and Women's Health Research, Segars and his team focus on clinical and translational research studies of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility, among other reproductive conditions. Segars has been active in graduate medical education for many years. He served as member and director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Division at the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, he has served on the boards of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Society for Reproductive Investigation and the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. Segars has published more than 200 research papers and serves on several editorial boards.
