We strive to match our volunteers with their interests and with the needs of the hospital. The following is a sampling of available volunteer positions:
Book Cart
Distributes books and magazines to help keep patients occupied during their hospital stay.
Chaplaincy Services
Offers spiritual support to patients and family members through prayer, meditation, worship, sacrament or other religious rituals to members of their own religious tradition or in ecumenical/interfaith capacity. More...
Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center
Salon volunteers greet patients and visitors, screen for their needs, help clients with products (free wigs, hats etc.) and perform salon duties. More...
Emergency Department
Assists staff as necessary including restocking carts and supply rooms, delivering meal trays, making frequent rounds to all patients to assess their needs and assisting with visitors in the waiting area.
Gift Shop
Assists customers in selecting merchandise while providing a warm, caring atmosphere and excellent customer service, processes purchases including cash and credit cards, maintains the Gift Shop's clean and organized appearance and restocks merchandise, as needed. More...
Greeter/Wayfinder
As the first point of contact for patients and guests, the Greeter/Wayfinder eases the anxiety that some visitors experience when they visit the hospital. This role provides for a comfortable and low stress environment. The Greeter/Wayfinder is a very interactive role in which the volunteer greets visitors, provides directions and/or escorts guests throughout the hospital. This opportunity may require a lot of walking.
Information Desk
Serves as the smiling face that greets patients, visitors and staff and assists the information desk staff with screening visitors and issuing visitor passes.
Journey to Better Health Program
The Journey to Better Health program provides health and social support services to Howard County residents through participating Howard County faith organizations. Journey to Better Health has the following volunteer opportunities available for community members who are 18 years of age and older. Training is provided for all opportunities.
- Community Companions provide support to Member Care Support Network members who have experienced a significant health event, such as a hospitalization.
- Health Educators teach self-management health classes that focus on long-term health conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes.
- Event Support Volunteers provide event set up and on-site registration support and event guidance and language interpretation for attendees.
Office/Clerical Support
Assists various departments with answering phones, scanning, computer data entry, looking up information, filing, mailing, making packets and running errands.
Outpatient Center Advisory Council
Patients who have experience with our outpatient departments are perhaps our best resource for advising us on the outpatient experience. Patient Care Units
Assists at nurses' stations and in patient rooms, engages in one-on-one interactions with patients, distributes and collects meal trays, answers phones, assists with paperwork and helps nurses and techs in many other ways.
Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy
Assists the staff with clerical duties; transporting patients to the gym; greets patients, visitors and staff; assists therapists with comforting patients; gathers items needed for treatment; and other duties as assigned.
Spiritual Care Volunteers
The Chaplaincy Services Department needs clergy and lay volunteers of all religious persuasions for our Spiritual Care Volunteer Programs. Surgical Family Waiting Area
Engages with family members and acts as a liaison to communicate the status of a loved one.
Teen Volunteers
High school students, ages 16-18, are eligible to apply as a VolunTeen. This is a great opportunity for young people not only to contribute to their community, but also discover if a career in health care is in their future. Teens that are accepted into the program may use their volunteer hours towards their student-service learning requirements. More...
